How Should Shoes Fit?

Recommended Toe Gap by Shoe Type

Shoe Type Recommended Toe Gap (mm) Why This Gap Is Needed
Pumps / Mid‑Heels (Round Toe) 5 mm to 10 mm Gravity naturally pushes the foot forward when the heel is elevated. A tighter gap prevents your foot from sliding too far forward and jamming into the front.
Ballet Flats 3 mm to 7 mm Ballet flats usually have minimal retention (no laces or straps). A massive gap will cause your heel to slip out completely when you walk.
Standard Sneakers / Trainers 10 mm to 15 mm This is the standard "thumb's width". It accounts for the foot flattening, expanding, and sliding forward dynamically during a normal stride.
Court / Agility Shoes 2 mm to 3 mm Intended for tennis or indoor sports. A minimal gap maximizes foot support, responsiveness, and lateral stability so the foot doesn't shift.
Barefoot / Wide‑Toe Box Flats 12 mm to 17 mm These follow the natural, blunt shape of a foot. Because the toe box doesn't taper, the entire 12mm+ gap is usable space for natural toe splay and extension.
